The 2011 "DAKAR AGRICOLE"
A major contribution to the G20 agricultural summit
|
| |
Paris, April 26, 2011 – Several ambitious policy propositions advocating an international agricultural and food governance were presented at the 2011 "Dakar Agricole" held in Dakar on April 18 and 19, in partnership with momagri.
On the basis on the conference findings, H.E. Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal, will shortly address a Dakar Declaration to the heads of state of the G20 nations and to leaders of the various international organizations.
Billed as a prelude to the G20 agricultural summit, this "Agricultural Davos" opens up a new chapter in international agricultural and food cooperation. A new agricultural diplomacy is indeed on the move.

As partner of the 2011 "Dakar Agricole"––a conference that gathered over 700 participants––momagri commends the work conducted by 70 experts, research professionals and leaders of farming organizations worldwide, producer and consumer organizations, political leaders and representatives of international institutions.
The presence of heads of state, vice presidents, prime ministers and numerous ministers of agriculture from the African continent confirmed the strategic significance of agriculture for their nations and the conditions to be met to achieve agricultural development.
Beyond the consensus on the mandatory coexistence of all agricultural activities throughout the world and the risks tied to the intrinsic volatility of agricultural prices and excessive speculation, a unanimous agreement was reached concerning the urgent need to establish a World Organization for Agriculture (WOA), a project that was presented during the conference by momagri President Pierre Pagesse.
Such organization, which would directly report to the G20, would carry out a mission of coordination between the highest level of the various international organizations to meet the agricultural and food challenges of the 21st century. It could be headquartered in Africa in order to show the weight of that continent in the development of agricultural production to cope with the acute population growth.

momagri is a Paris-based think tank that promotes a new vision for agriculture. Founded and chaired by Pierre Pagesse, Chairman of the French Groupe Limagrain, the organization includes representatives of agricultural enterprises and officials from the healthcare, economic development, strategy and defense fields. It aims to support the regulation of agricultural markets by way of new evaluation tools (such as economic models and indicators) and new proposals for an international agriculture and food governance based on free-trade principles.
