Press release
Hong Kong, 14th December 2005
It is urgent to create a
World Organization for Agriculture
Today, agriculture is held hostage by the WTO. As talks on industry, services and intellectual property are stalled, many try to hold agriculture responsible for the situation.
Agriculture is extremely important for the future of humanity as food sovereignty and security, as well as the satisfaction of growing food requirements, depends on it.
In pretending that full trade liberalization of agricultural markets will promote world prosperity, the Neoliberals lead the way to the desertification of our countryside, the loss of jobs, just like they prevent the growth of the least developed countries.
The anti-globalization movements ask the right questions but are not capable of giving concrete answers! The Neoliberals on the other hand are only capable of giving off-the-shelf answers!
It is urgent to define a strategy for the future of world agriculture, one which does not only based on a pure commercial approach but which takes into account three objectives: satisfying growing food requirements, fighting poverty and ensuring the independence and sovereignty of States.
The model of the World Bank, used by the WTO, is unsatisfactory because it considers that:
-
supply immediately adjusts itself to demand, which completely eliminates speculative movements and undermines agricultural markets.
-
preferential agreements do not exist for developing countries.
-
demand is totally elastic to prices, thus we would eat twice as much if food prices were halved, which is not only a false assumption but more importantly an insult to those who die from hunger.
The WOAgri aspires to establish the conditions for an international regulation of the agricultural markets, which would reconcile these three objectives.
Therefore, the WOAgri is creating a new economic model, the NAR model, using the game theory approach to take into account economical, environmental and social parameters as well as other criteria such as innovation.
