The Dairy Crisis Reaches Spain

27 April 2009

On April 16, thousands of Spanish cattle breeders swarmed into Madrid to protest their inadequate income levels. Indeed, the Spanish Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA) states, “close to 75 percent of the 25,000 dairy farms are selling milk below production costs”. Today, breeders are getting €0.20 to €0.30 per liter, against €0.40 to €0.50 last year. And the economic downturn that is severely affecting Spain is not helping the situation of Spanish breeders, who thus demand “extraordinary” measures from the Spanish Government.

The crisis currently disturbing the Spanish dairy industry follows a pattern that is well known in France, where the volatility of milk prices thrust the industry in a long-lasting crisis over the past six months. However, in opposition to France that proposed to postpone the elimination of quotas––which was included in the CAP Health Check because of farmers’ difficulties––Spain always advocated deregulation to open up new markets to its cattle breeders. This solution might be investigated again in view of new problems experienced by breeders.
