A new vision for agriculture
momagri, movement for a world agricultural organization, is a think tank chaired by Christian Pèes.
It brings together, managers from the agricultural world and important people from external perspectives,
such as health, development, strategy and defense. Its objective is to promote regulation
of agricultural markets by creating new evaluation tools, such as economic models and indicators,
and by drawing up proposals for an agricultural and international food policy.

Social economy at agriculture’s bedside

30 November 2009

Assembled in Chamonix on November 9th and 10th, during the International Social Economy Forum, 200 leaders from 35 countries discussed the global food crisis, in particular expressing their opposition to the WTO’s international agricultural negotiations. Seeking to promote another way of looking at the economy, in particular by highlighting democracy, the “mutual benefit” notion, and collective property (such as cooperatives), the 4th edition of the Mont Blanc Meetings1 highlighted the key role of agriculture in combating poverty.

In the presence of emissaries from several United Nations institutions (UNDP, ILO, WFP, FAO), the International Forum for Leaders of the Social Economy shares momagri’s convictions, i.e. that the solution to the food challenge facing the planet does not lie in the unregulated liberalization of agricultural trade. While Pascal Lamy continues to call for the hasty conclusion of the Doha Cycle, momagri is pleased that awareness of the specific strategic dimension of agriculture is growing.

Indeed, it is only if the international community realizes the importance of worldwide agriculture that the planet can successfully feed its population.
