Hunger is not a fatality

16 November 2009

At a time when there are an increasing number of international conferences, summits and multilateral forums on hunger in the world, it is important, now more than ever, to not consider hunger as a “structural fatality”, as Pope Benedict XVI highlighted during the last World Food Summit held between November 16-18.

Given the successive failures of international meetings to find real solutions to the problem – and the recent World Food Summit has once again proven this1 – it does not seem as if hunger has mobilized the interest of the international community. So much so that as Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva deplored, “many seem to have lost the ability to become angry.” And yet, the figures indicate they should: Today, 1 person in 6 suffers from hunger worldwide. 17,000 children die of hunger or related diseases everyday, that is one child every 6 seconds2.

This reality is even more difficult to accept because many experts believe that the world can produce sufficient quantities of food. Once again, this year, estimates published by the FAO and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) highlight an overabundant harvest of all types of cereals (2 234 million tons) compared to the global demand for grains (2 189 million tons). But what is demand? Is it only solvent demand?
