Global food security is a “key element” of US foreign policy

28 September 2009

In the closing session of the annual Clinton Global Initiative1, on September 24, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton presented the broad outline of an American plan aimed at improving global food security, which has now been elevated to the rank of “key element” of US foreign policy. According to the US Secretary of State, since 2007 there have been food riots in over 60 countries. According to her, hunger “poses a threat to the stability of governments, societies and borders (…)”, adding that “food security is not just about food. But it is all about security."

An initial sum of 3.5 billion dollars has been set aside for the plan. It is one of the promises made by the rich countries during the G8 meeting in Aquila (Italy) last July, to allocate 20 billion dollars towards agricultural development.

This plan confirms US rationality on the subject, which, since President Kennedy, has always considered that agriculture and food were strategic for national and international security.
