G20 foreign ministers in Mexico to discuss food security

February 27, 2012

Several G20 foreign ministers met on 19th and 20th February in Los Cabos, Mexico, to discuss global governance, climate change, sustainable development but also food security.

Improving food security and addressing agricultural price volatility are indeed among the five priorities in Mexico where the G20 will be chaired this year, continuing the work undertaken under the French G20 Presidency of last year. Issues concerning agricultural price volatility will be mainly carried out by a work group as part of discussions on finance, while G20 Ministers of Agriculture will discuss production in May.

Even though the informal meeting of last 19th and 20th February did not result in any official document to be negotiated at the G20 summit of next 18th and 19th June, it did generate useful ideas and recommendations.

The ten G20 foreign ministers who made the trip to this meeting, including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and the chief diplomat of the European Union Catherine Ashton, particularly emphasized the need to address issues on food security, energy and sustainable development in joint and parallel manner.

The issue of global food security is a complex one because it incorporates many interrelated dimensions around agriculture such as development, trade or finance. It is as such essential to initiate global agricultural governance, bringing together the various international organizations1.

Momagri hope that the work undertaken at the G20 will expand the debate and lead to concrete and effective proposals.
