Former President Clinton Endorses Agriculture’s Strategic Role for the Stability of Nations.

10 November 2008

In his speech at the UN headquarters for the World Food Day commemoration marking the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the FAO, Former President Bill Clinton urged the international community to stop using the global financial crisis as an “excuse” to avoid dealing with escalating hunger, adding that agricultural self-sufficiency is the only long-term solution if we want to curb world hunger and avoid future financial woes.

“The food crisis, the energy crisis and the financial crisis are showing that we live in an inter-dependent world and that we cannot escape from each other’s fate,” said Clinton, adding that the solution to the current worldwide crises must therefore be global and comprehensive. Indeed, the national security of most countries worldwide has been disturbed by the financial crisis and we can anticipate that the food crisis will worsen the situation, notably in developing countries where seventy-five percent of the people live in rural areas.

It is therefore crucial to answer the food crisis with a solution that accounts for agriculture’s specific character. As Bill Clinton indicated, it would be “crazy to treat food like a color television set and to think that it is possible to develop the many countries where [his international NGO] works without increasing their capacity to feed themselves.”
