Farmers establish a world organization to fight food insecurity
|
11 April 2011 |
Against a background of concerns regarding global food security, more than fifty farmers organizations and agricultural cooperative groups from every continent met on March 29 at the Copa-Cogeca headquarters in Brussels and established the World Farmers’ Organization.
Above all, the new organization is expected to fill the void created by the liquidation of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP). Based in Rome, the organization aims to meet the urgent issue of global food security and “to build up a satisfactory relationship with the FAO.” Its activities will be guided by three principles:
• Establishing better cooperation between the various agricultural representatives throughout the world;
• Escalating investment in agriculture;
• Improving farmers’ livelihoods.
Speaking as president of the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU), Douglas Taylor-Freeme said, “Today marks an historic occasion. In view of increasing concerns over market volatility and food security, this Organization will bring together farmers and cooperatives from all over the world to exchange ideas and find common solutions.”
Beyond that, it is interesting to note the impact of the founding words of this new organization, which positions farmers on the same level as trade for the WTO, or Health for the WHO, in international discussions. Let us hope that this will not be solely a mere change in the name of an organization, but rather the formation of a valid forum, whose objective will be to provide concrete solutions to food insecurity issues.
