Australia: is the country’s food security under threat?

13 June 2011

If the Australian government does not act to protect local agricultural production, the country could face food shortages within the next 10 years. This is the opinion, at any rate, of national vegetable producers’ associations, who were quick to sound the alarm.

Angelo Demas, director of an agribusiness in Adelaide, stated: “I dread the day when all our products will be imported or grown through farms owned by large foreign investment companies. If this is the case, our food security is threatened”.

This warning has raised grave concerns: it was immediately taken seriously and relayed by the Australian Food and Grocery Council, an organization that represents and advises agribusiness professionals. Moreover, if farmers are increasingly worried, it is because Australian food production has been in crisis for several years. Starting with, in particular, recurrent climatic hazards, price wars in large-scale distribution, urban expansion at the expense of arable land and foreign competition due to excessive trade liberalization.

This is not the first time that an historically liberal country is beginning to understand the adverse effects of an over exploited open trade policy in terms of food dependency, as recently observed in Great Britain1. Are we witnessing the growing awareness on the need to rethink the terms of international agricultural trade?
