A billion starving people in the world

11 May 2009

According to Jacques Diouf, Director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Program (FAO), an additional 104 million people will suffer from hunger in 2009 because of the financial and economic crisis. During a press conference on the May 5th, he noted, “there will be around a billion people who will be deprived of their fundamental right to food”, while at the same time highlighting that this level has never been reached before in the past.

These declarations follow the joint meeting organized on the same day by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Program (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), on the theme of long-term investments to ensure food security for the world’s poor populations. It was the occasion to remind developed nations of their commitment to aid the poor countries that have been affected by the food crisis, in spite of the financial crisis. It was also the time to underline that the amount of money necessary for this is incommensurable with the amount recently spent to bail out the banking sector. In fact, of the promises made on the FAO’s platform last June to curb the food crisis, which is around 6.5 billion euros, only 10% have been kept. This represents less than 0.03% of the amount committed to tackle the financial crisis. 1

A rather useful reminder, while the international community is currently only focused on the economic and financial crisis. However, the food crisis threatens world balance just a much; and the symbolic threshold of one billion starving people worldwide forcefully highlights this.
