100 million Additional Indians Fell Below the Poverty Line

26 April 2010

According to the last official figures published on Sunday, April 18, India counts 410 million people living under the poverty line (considered at 1.25 US dollar a day), that is 100 million more than in 2004. This increase brings the poverty ratio to 37.2 % of the Indian population, against 27.5% in 2004 …

This revaluation, calculated within the framework of a coming new Law on Food Security in discussion at present in the Indian Parliament1, is of ill omen to the future. The poverty line is indeed directly calculated on the basis of families’ capacity to afford at least a complete meal a day, which should correspond to the minimum nutritional needs. Beyond testifying the economic situation of the country, these figures are thus the mirror of the food insecurity which persists and increases.

While India is recovering with difficulty from the economic crisis, the context is not improving due to the prices of foodstuffs which undergo approximately 17% inflation. It reaches such an extent that certain newspapers do not hesitate to title: «Food crisis on the horizon! ". 2
